Naval Simulation System

Naval Simulation System (NSS)
Web Site
Description:
Naval Simulation System (NSS) is a state-of-the-art monte carlo simulation. It:
  • Simulates all Naval warfare areas with moderate to high resolution
  • Can be used for Course of Action (COA) analysis at sea or shore based studies
  • Is a multi-warfare/C4ISR (command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance) simulation
  • Explicitly represents chain of command and models operational plans, including tactics, doctrine and situation-dependent actions
  • Models all Warfare Mission Areas (WMAs) in an integrated fashion
Related efforts from this organization include:
  • Land Attack Destroyer (DD 21) Analyses
  • JWARS Design and Development
  • System Effectiveness Analysis Simulation (SEAS III) The System Effectiveness Analysis Simulation (SEAS) is an Air Force model that simulates combat situations that include multiple military branches. Specifically, SEAS is a multi-mission (or "campaign slice"), two-sided, force-on-force, Monte Carlo combat model with explicit sensor geometry and information network topology constrained by circuit time delays. It was developed specifically for long-range planning of force structure acquisition strategy and, in particular, space-based C4ISR systems (command, control, communications, computer, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance).
  • Fleet Battle Experiment (FBE) Program
  • HLA Training

  • Another source of information on NSS is this Navy Small Business Research (SBIR) effort.
  • SPAWAR Virtual Program Office has information about NSS. Site requires a DoD PKI certificate and registration to enter.
  • The NSS record in the Navy Modeling & Simulation Resources Repository (NMSRR) from NAVMSMO, last updated June 2004.

An Office of Naval Research page said this about NSS:

The NSS is the Navy's primary next generation simulation for operations, analysis, and wargaming/experimentation; hence the proposed NSS logistics enhancements will leverage the considerable to date and planned US Navy investment in NSS.
NSS is an object-oriented simulation that models surveillance, communications, tactical picture processing, engagement, sea-based logistics, and command and control (C2) inclding plans and tactics explicitly, so that dynamic Expeditionary Logistics can be set up in NSS without extensive new software developments.
Given the NSS representation of sea-based logistics, logistics C2, wargaming, and training applications can be conducted in the context of realistic scenarios, avoiding the risk of mismatches that are inevitable when different tools are used for C2, wargaming, and training.
Finally, since NSS is DII COE compliant and being incorporated into GCCS-M, it has direct access to operational logistics data and planning tools.

Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) provides integrated information systems to the fleet. Information--financial, administrative, statistical--is the lifeblood of the modern world. For the U.S. Navy's tactical commanders at sea, information can well mean the difference between victory and defeat, life and death.
