CSS Introduction

  • CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets
  • CSS describes how HTML elements are to be displayed on screen, paper, or in other media

CSS Syntax

CSS selector

CSS Comments

  • A CSS comment starts with /* and ends with */. Comments can also span multiple lines:

Example

1  p {
2     color: red;
3     /* This is a single-line comment */
4     text-align: center;
5 }
6
7 /* This is
8 a multi-line
9 comment */

CSS Selectors

  • The element Selector
  • The id Selector
  • The class Selector
  • Grouping Selectors

Example

 1 /* The element Selector */
 2 p {
 3     text-align: center;
 4     color: red;
 5 }
 6 /* The id Selector */
 7 #para1 {
 8     text-align: center;
 9     color: red;
10 }
11 /* The class Selector */
12 .center {
13     text-align: center;
14     color: red;
15 }
16 p.center {
17     text-align: center;
18     color: red;
19 }
20 /* Grouping Selectors */
21 h1, h2, p {
22     text-align: center;
23     color: red;
24 }

Example

CSS Margins

  • The CSS margin properties are used to generate space around elements.
  • The margin properties set the size of the transparent space OUTSIDE the border.

  • length - specifies a margin in px, pt, cm, etc.
  • % - specifies a margin in % of the width of the containing element

Note: It is also possible to use negative values for margins; to overlap content.

CSS Padding

  • The padding clears an area around the content (inside the border) of an element.

property values

  • length - specifies a padding in px, pt, cm, etc.
  • % - specifies a padding in % of the width of the containing element
  • inherit - specifies that the padding should be inherited from the parent elemen
